Preventure Facilitator Workshops

The Preventure training is an intensive two-day training program covering how to use Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) principles and basic counselling skills to implement the PreVenture Program.

During your training, you will learn about the evidence base and theoretical approach of PreVenture and walk through a hands-on practical experience delivering the PreVenture Program.

This training course teaches you how to guide teens in a positive direction and encourage self-resilience and self efficiency.

Upon completion you will be a certified PreVenture facilitator. Certification licensing must be renewed annually for continued facilitation.

Certified facilitators receive access to the Preventure Zone on our website, which includes a facilitator dashboard with the tools and support you’ll need to deliver the program successfully, such as:

  • The personality survey, consent forms, peer-reviewed articles, best practices, school information packets, and more.

Facilitator Certification

There are four levels of facilitator certification available. In order to receive low- or high-fidelity Facilitator Certification, participants must be employed by an educational or counselling institution and/or be members of a professional order/association. Facilitator training is available both in a face-to-face and online format.

This certification will provide you with the tools needed to implement the PreVenture program. An expert trainer will lead an interactive discussion around the evidence and science behind PreVenture and hands-on practical experience delivering the program. Online training takes 3 days; in-person training takes 2 days.

This training protocol was used in our research trials and involves clinical supervision by one of our expert trainers. Using the PreVenture Intervention Fidelity and Adherence (PIFA) scale, our expert trainer will observe a certified low-fidelity facilitator delivering the intervention and provide feedback and support.

The supervisor/coach level is achieved after the high-fidelity level. This certification is tailored to clinicians interested in conducting high-fidelity supervision and providing coaching and support to low-fidelity facilitators.

PreVenture utilizes the Train-the-Trainer Model

Interested in becoming a PreVenture Trainer in your community? This training will certify you to train others in low and high-fidelity certifications.

* Eligibility – In order to receive Trainer Certification, participants must be mental health clinicians and be members of a professional order/association.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some of the more common questions
we get about becoming a PreVenture facilitator and training.

How much time is needed to run the PreVenture program?2022-01-28T19:26:09-05:00

The PreVenture Program consists of two 90-minute workshops, spaced approximately one week apart. The PreVenture model is efficient and takes much less time away from the classroom than most school-based programs.

What is the ideal age or grade in which to implement the program?2022-01-28T19:26:51-05:00

Your target grade will depend on the unique needs and desired outcomes within your school or community population. Most of our schools or community partners have chosen to run the program with either grade 7, 8 or 9 students year after year, but the program has been designed for adolescents aged 12 – 17 and is appropriate for any young person within this age range.

Can the workshops be broken up into shorter sessions?2022-01-28T19:27:12-05:00

Yes, the workshops can be broken up into three 1-hour sessions or four 45-minute sessions instead of the standard two 90-minute sessions, based on school scheduling and preferences. This will not impact the fidelity of the program as long as all of the material is covered.

How do we obtain consent from parents before offering the PreVenture program to students?2022-01-28T19:28:05-05:00

Most of our schools and community partners use an opt-out model (passive consent) to inform parents about the PreVenture program prior to running the workshops. We will provide both passive consent and active consent letter templates that can be adapted and sent to parents prior to the workshops. It is ultimately up to each school or organization to establish how parental consent will be obtained, as this needs to be in line with local laws and school/organizational policies.

For the sake of evening out the numbers in the different personality profile groups, could I move an adolescent to a different group or combine groups if needed?2022-04-05T21:35:38-04:00

Groups cannot be combined and adolescents can only be moved to another group if they are also eligible for that group. The personality targeted factor is what makes PreVenture unique and effective. Each adolescent is given a manual designed for their specific personality style. Adolescents with similar personality traits are taught how to channel their strengths towards achieving their goals.

How does the program avoid labeling?2022-06-14T14:21:34-04:00

The program is designed to allow teens to self report on their interests and preferences and subsequently, be matched with a workshop that is relevant to what they have reported. The results are strictly confidential. The only individuals with access to the results (with identifying information revealed) are the facilitators involved in delivering the program. Moreover, confidentiality is discussed at the beginning of each workshop. Teens are asked to agree to keep what takes place in the workshops confidential. Building trust is an essential component of the program.

Can PreVenture be used alongside other prevention programs?2022-04-05T21:35:37-04:00

Yes, research has shown that PreVenture works as effectively when combined with existing universal programs (Newton et al., 2019).

Do I have to have a degree in Psychology or a similar field to be a PreVenture facilitator?2022-04-05T21:35:37-04:00

In order to be eligible to become a PreVenture facilitator, you must have experience working with adolescents. Furthermore, you must be employed by an educational or counselling institution and/or be a member of a professional order/association. Some examples of individuals who have trained to be PreVenture facilitators are psychologists, psychotherapists, nurses, guidance counselors, social workers and teachers.

What types of organizations can participate in the PreVenture program?2022-04-05T21:35:37-04:00

The PreVenture Program is appropriate for any youth-focused organization. Schools, community centre settings, youth counselling organizations, drop-in centres, youth camps, group homes and youth detention centres are some examples of organizations that have benefited from the PreVenture Program.

What are the costs associated with becoming a PreVenture Facilitator and/or Trainer?2022-04-05T21:35:37-04:00

Please contact us at info@preventureprogram.com to discuss costs associated with PreVenture trainings.

How can I become a PreVenture Trainer so that I can train staff within my organization or community to facilitate the PreVenture program?2022-04-05T21:35:35-04:00

PreVenture Trainers must have experience working with youth and a background in mental health. Before moving to Trainer status it is important that they acquire experience facilitating PreVenture workshops on their own. You can send your resume and a cover letter describing why you are interested in becoming a PreVenture Trainer to info@preventureprogram.com and we will reach out to qualified candidates with more information about the process of becoming a Trainer.
